The 2011 Audi A3 ranks 2 out of 8 Upscale Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 99 published reviews and test drives of the Audi A3, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2011 Audi A3 has a lot to offer: a TDI trim with impressive fuel economy, fun driving dynamics and a well-crafted interior. The A3’s most intimidating feature is its price.

The automotive press can’t deny that the 2011 Audi A3 is a good car. It has a winning combination of quality, sportiness and attractive styling that is a rarity for small car shoppers. The A3 is also one of the safest small cars on the market. In fact, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named last year’s A3 a “Top Safety Pick.” With no significant changes for 2011, the designation should stick.

In addition to top safety ratings, sporty performance and high quality, Audi offers an optional TDI diesel engine to the mix. The diesel’s fuel economy is impressive, and drivers should expect to average 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the highway -- figures other upscale small cars can’t match.

Despite these strong points, reviewers say the A3’s price tag makes its performance capabilities and high-quality fit and finish less attractive. The base A3 starts at $27,270, and the base TDI is an additional $2,980. Consumers willing to pay nearly $30,000, however, won’t be disappointed.

Other Cars to Consider

If you can live without Audi’s prestige and performance, there are many less expensive choices that won’t make you feel like you’re settling for less. The Volkswagen GTI is about $4,000 less and is zippier. Reviewers even say the GTI’s interior could be mistaken for an Audi’s.

About $3,000 less than the A3, the Volvo C30 will appeal to shoppers looking for an eye-catcher. The C30 is modern and muscular with a unique elongated glass hatchback door. While the C30 looks good, it doesn’t perform as well as the Volkswagen GTI or Audi A3. Plus, the C30 can’t stow much with only 12.9 cubic feet of cargo space.

Those looking for a car with German roots and available diesel power should check out the Volkswagen Jetta. It’s not ranked as an Upscale Small Car, but it is German, has a bunch of trunk space (16 cubic feet) and with a base price of $15,995 for the 2011 model, there’s plenty of room for customization. The Jetta also has a TDI option that’s cheaper than the base A3. Pricing for the 2011 Jetta TDI isn’t available yet, but the 2010 TDI was $22,830. If upscale options found in the A3 -- such as a navigation system, sun roof and rear side airbags -- are added, buyers will pay $27,820 (with the automatic transmission), which is only a few hundred dollars more than the base gasoline Audi A3. In comparison, the A3 TDI with the same options is $33,650 -- or $5,830 more. Another reason to buy the Jetta TDI over the A3 TDI: the A3 and Jetta have the same engine.

Still, shoppers who know they want an A3 should look into the 2010 gas and diesel options, which are practically identical to the 2011. Dealers need to clear 2010 stock, so there are many good deals to be had. Check our Audi listings to see the average price paid in your area.
